The most common symptom of ADHD is the inability to focus on a single uninteresting task. Other symptoms may include<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-4\"><\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Forgetting to complete a task<\/li><li>Being inclinable towards distraction<\/li><li>Difficulties sitting still<\/li><li>Interrupting other people while talking<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Classic amphetamine medications that treat ADHD work partly by increasing brain acetylcholine.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span>  In addition, cholinergic drugs such as galantamine have helped with ADHD symptoms in children and adolescents.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-6\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Forgetfulness, memory problems, and Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1049512658-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1049512658-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1049512658-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1049512658-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1049512658.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poor cholinergic activity and low levels of acetylcholine in the brain are linked to cognitive decline and memory problems like dementia.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-7\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acetylcholine plays a central role in the development of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. The disease manifests itself as gradual destruction of cholinergic neurons\u2014the neurons that use acetylcholine. Impairment of these neurons makes it more difficult for acetylcholine to transmit neuronal signals, thus affecting memory, recall, and learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neuritic plaques composed of amyloid-beta protein are characteristic of the brain affected by Alzheimer\u2019s disease. They are correlated to the cholinergic markers\u2019 reduction. Moreover, cholinergic deficit is related to amyloid beta accumulation, which causes neuronal loss and impairment.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-8\"><\/span><span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-9\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most successful Alzheimer\u2019s drugs inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme responsible for acetylcholine breakdown. The inhibition may increase acetylcholine levels.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-10\"><\/span><span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-11\"><\/span><span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-12\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Muscle fatigue<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need acetylcholine in your neuromuscular junctions to contract your muscles. During exercising, acetylcholine levels drop, which is why you get muscle fatigue.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-13\"><\/span> Whereas the recovery of both acetylcholine and acetylcholine neurons, which require acetylcholine breakdown, is important for exercise recovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning difficulty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many neurological disorders and neurotransmitter imbalances can cause learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia (struggle with math), dysgraphia (struggle to write), and ADHD. It could be age-related, but can also be partly genetics, developmental, and environmental.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given how important acetylcholine is, it makes sense that acetylcholine imbalance contributes to many learning difficulties.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-14\"><\/span><span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-15\"><\/span><span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-16\"><\/span> However, increasing acetylcholine alone may not be enough to cure these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Postural orthostatic hypotension and tachycardia syndrome (POTS)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1192627558-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1192627558-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1192627558-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1192627558-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-GettyImages-1192627558-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orthostatic or postural hypotension is abnormally low blood pressure when a person suddenly stands up too quickly after sitting or lying down. Symptoms include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Dizziness<\/li><li>Lightheadedness<\/li><li>Rapid increase in heart rate<\/li><li>Fainting<\/li><li>Weakness<\/li><li>Confusion<\/li><li>Nausea<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In most cases, these symptoms could be due to dehydration or long rest and are not dangerous. However, in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), the autonomic system cannot regulate blood pressure properly, causing you to feel these symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cause of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension is a failure of noradrenergic neurotransmission associated with a range of other autonomic disorders.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-17\"><\/span> <strong>POTS patients often also have symptoms of acetylcholine dysfunction<\/strong>, such as reduced saliva function, slowed gut movement, nausea, constipation, and bladder dysfunction.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-18\"><\/span>&nbsp; An antibody that blocks acetylcholine function can also cause autonomic disorders that lead to POTS.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-19\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a small clinical study involving 15 patients, acetylcholinesterase inhibition helped neurogenic orthostatic hypotension&nbsp; The drug (pyridostigmine) significantly increased blood pressure, reduced orthostatic heart rate, and improved the overall clinical image of the patients. <span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-20\"><\/span>&nbsp; Another clinical study of 17 patients confirmed this finding.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-21\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chronic inflammation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-symptom-gd73449e95_1920-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-symptom-gd73449e95_1920-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-symptom-gd73449e95_1920-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-symptom-gd73449e95_1920-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nootopia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Optimized-symptom-gd73449e95_1920.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acetylcholine is a key neurotransmitter in the inflammatory reflex. The reflex is how your nervous system responds very quickly to inhibit acute inflammation and prevent the inflammation from causing too much damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the inflammatory reflex, acetylcholine controls inflammation via the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve communicates between the brain and the immune cells. Together, these systems modulate inflammatory responses both through neuronal signals and the blood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the immune system, acetylcholine breakdown at the correct times and places reduces inflammation.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-22\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, acetylcholine dysregulations tend to go hand-in-hand with chronic inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion 2:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Low acetylcholine may correlate with brain fog, fatigue and mental inclarity, forgetfulness, etc. It may also manifest as chronic inflammation and muscle fatigue.
